Long before the indigenous people of southeastern North America first encountered Europeans and Africans, they established communities with clear social and political hierarchies and rich cultural traditions. Award-winning historian Gregory D. Smithers brings this world to life in Native Southerners, a sweeping narrative of American Indian history in the Southeast from the time before European colonialism to the Trail of Tears and beyond.

In the Native South, as in much of North America, storytelling is key to an understanding of origins and tradition—and the stories of the indigenous people of the Southeast are central to Native Southerners. Spanning territory reaching from modern-day Louisiana and Arkansas to the Atlantic coast, and from present-day Tennessee and Kentucky through Florida, this book gives voice to the lived history of such well-known polities as the Cherokees, Creeks, Seminoles, Chickasaws, and Choctaws, as well as smaller Native communities like the Nottoway, Occaneechi, Haliwa-Saponi, Catawba, Biloxi-Chitimacha, Natchez, Caddo, and many others. From the oral and cultural traditions of these Native peoples, as well as the written archives of European colonists and their Native counterparts, Smithers constructs a vibrant history of the societies, cultures, and peoples that made and remade the Native South in the centuries before the American Civil War. What emerges is a complex picture of how Native Southerners understood themselves and their world—a portrayal linking community and politics, warfare and kinship, migration, adaptation, and ecological stewardship—and how this worldview shaped and was shaped by their experience both before and after the arrival of Europeans.

As nuanced in detail as it is sweeping in scope, the narrative Smithers constructs is a testament to the storytelling and the living history that have informed the identities of Native Southerners to our day.

Is it worth swimming in shark-infested waters to surf a 50-foot, career-record wave?

Is it riskier to make an action movie or a horror movie?

Should sex workers forfeit 50 percent of their income for added security or take a chance and keep the extra money?

Most people wouldn't expect an economist to have an answer to these questions--or to other questions of daily life, such as who to date or how early to leave for the airport. But those people haven't met Allison Schrager, an economist and award-winning journalist who has spent her career examining how people manage risk in their lives and careers.

Whether we realize it or not, we all take risks large and small every day. Even the most cautious among us cannot opt out--the question is always which risks to take, not whether to take them at all. What most of us don't know is how to measure those risks and maximize the chances of getting what we want out of life.

In An Economist Walks into a Brothel, Schrager equips readers with five principles for dealing with risk, principles used by some of the world's most interesting risk takers. For instance, she interviews a professional poker player about how to stay rational when the stakes are high, a paparazzo in Manhattan about how to spot different kinds of risk, horse breeders in Kentucky about how to diversify risk and minimize losses, and a war general who led troops in Iraq about how to prepare for what we don't see coming.

When you start to look at risky decisions through Schrager's new framework, you can increase the upside to any situation and better mitigate the downside.

"This is a brilliantly conceived book in which Dr. Schrager presents a wonderful series of stories, or as she calls them ‘parables,’ to support her thesis that the basic principles of financial economics can be applied to everyday risk decisions. Each chapter features an interesting narrative about a fascinating character or two she has interviewed to cleverly illustrate various ways to more realistically assess and manage risk.

In a recent interview about this book, Dr Schrager shares her passion for her work. It is clear that this lead her to interview people who were just as passionate about their work. This contributes significantly to the ability of the author to delightfully and lucidly share her expertise in a notoriously difficult field of study. I think this book is a significant contribution to the field for its originality and intelligibility."

An Economist Walks into a Brothel And Other Unexpected Places to Understand Risk eBook Allison Schrager Reviews :

An Economist Walks into a Brothel And Other Unexpected Places to Understand Risk eBook Allison Schrager Reviews

  • If the title doesn't induce you to buy this book, then the first few pages will do it. Alison Schrager has done a masterful job explaining in plain English -- using rather (ahem) unconventional examples and illustrations -- of how to take account of and manage risk in your life, drawing on fundamental lessons of finance and economics. I predict this book will be huge best seller, and help make believers out of some doubters about the usefulness of economic reasoning. An economics and a best seller? -- no not a contradiction in terms. This book demonstrates that, get it, read it and you'll see what I mean
  • What a great and fun read! An economist and a journalist, Schrager writes lucidly and compellingly about how to hedge our bets and plan for the future. The book is incredibly readable, and the author explains economic principles without dumbing down the material or giving it a partisan spin. By using examples of big time risk takers, from prostitutes and horse breeders to magicians and big wave surfers, she gives the reader unexpected models that highlight important economic concepts. A fascinating read with smart analysis, this is a book we should all own!
  • If you haven't given much thought to risk or read any of the pertinent literature or studies, then perhaps this book will help focus you and provide some new insights into human decision making that had been hidden. But I struggled to find anything new here. Moreover, the deference to finance seems misplaced. "Financial economics is the science of risk," writes Schrager. A science? What about the last financial crisis? And the 2000 stock market bubble? And the numerous hedge funds that have closed shop in the past 10 years? And the persistent underperformance of most fund managers? Obviously, other forces are at work here, which makes the study of risk complex and nuanced.

That said, risk management is a subject that deserves everyone's attention, to be sure. I suspect most of us aren't great at spotting, weighing and managing opportunities and risks, and perhaps this book will help -- so long as you haven't already delved deeply into the subject. If you're just starting out or early in your thought process, this book isn't a bad place to start.
  • This book is intended for people new to concepts of risk management, using some colorful real-life examples, such as big wave surfing, racehorse breeding, and the titular brothels. Alas, some of the connections between real-life risk-takers and the specified concepts are very thin. In addition, there was a dimension to risk that I found not explored quite as well, which is the human element.

For example, in the section about paparazzi, the person profiled set up a "cartel" of sorts, which members would sometime break - a risk hedging tool often can break due how humans actually behave. Similarly, the book ends talking about the need for regulators to keep up with evolving risks (no argument there), but without the recognition there's a reason the savviest risk-taking aren't regulators.

I think this would be a good book for the general public as well as schools, going down to high school level. You hook them with what seems like it would be a titillating story (legal brothels), but it's really about how to structure a business so that it's a win-win for all involved (owner, employees, and customers). There's a good index and lots of notes at the end that could be used for deeper discussion and exploration in class.
  • Entertaining and filled with examples, this book is a great read for non-economists (think Freakonomics). I did spot a couple typos, but they were minor and nothing that can't easily be forgiven, considering how recently the book came out. Would recommend for those interested in economics, probability or statistical thinking. The author references several interviews with lots of different people which make this book a lovely experience even for those already familiar with risk assessment and financial economics. 5 stars, worth checking out.
  • This is a brilliantly conceived book in which Dr.

I think this book is a significant contribution to the field for its originality and intelligibility.

"MS3 here.
Recommend this book. There are some pretty drastic changes from the prior edition. For instance, active phase of labor is now considered 6 cm and up, not 4 cm. When evaluating for ectopic pregnancy, B-hcg is expected to increase by >50% within 48h (previously was more strict cut-off at 66%).

Case Files Obstetrics and Gynecology Fifth Edition Eugene C Toy Patti Jayne Ross Benton Baker III MD John Jennings 9780071848725 Books Reviews

  • This book would be fantastic, except for the fact that it constantly contradicts itself. Critical errors are extremely common in this book and other case files books I have studied. These books seem to have forgone proofreading and editing all together.

Update Having finished reading this book I can confidently recommend that you do not buy it. Please don't read it. There are countless serious errata and contradictions thoughout the entire book. This author clearly did not do his homework when he wrote this book, and it is very obvious. Much of the really important medical information flat out incorrect.

    Here are some examples
    1) The pathophysiology of Sheehan syndrome (it's caused by post-partum hypotension leading to infarction then necrosis of the anterior pituitary gland, not by a hemorrhagic stroke in the anterior pituitary like he states)
    2) On page 475, his first clinical pearl states that all breast masses must be biopsied regardless of what the imaging studies show. Later on this same page, he states that some masses can simply be observed without biopsying them.
    3) Indications for BCRA 1/2 testing contradicts himself on pages 454 448
    4) Pg. 416 He states that laparoscopy is always required to treat ectopic pregnancies, and that methotrexate should not be used. He then states on pg. 419 that methotrexate is the standard treatment for ectopic pregnancies.
    5) Pg. 23 table 1-1 states different information for the normal labor parameters than is stated on page 60. Turns out, page 23 is incorrect
  • At my school, OB/GYN is 5 weeks with the shelf at the end. I bought the Case Files books on the recommendation of a classmate who found them very helpful. I did benefit from skimming about half the book as a decent primer for the OB floors. Not sure that benefit was worth the price tag. For shelf studying, I did not return to this book; rather, I did most of the APGO questions and all of the relevant UWorld questions, with excellent results.
  • MS3 here.

  • This is a great book, and in my opinion, is the best book out there for the OB/Gyn Shelf/NBME. The book is organized into 2 halves- OB and Gyn- and there are practice questions after each vignette, and comprehensive questions at the back of the book. This also has information to help you succeed on the L&D service. I compared it to my classmates with the 4th edition, and I must say that the 5th edition has more practice questions and more up to date information on preeclampsia and other disorders. If you read this whole book, you will ace the shelf.
  • Excellent resource. Forget any medical textbook or module assigned during your rotations. This book is concise, easy to read, and an excellent resource. Combine careful reading of this book with a question bank, and you'll have the ability to score above average on your shelf/comat exam
  • It was so awesome to have patients in clinic with VERY similar problems as the ones I was exposed to in this book. I had general and some specific ideas as to treating and advising my patients thanks to this book. And after taking the shelf exam, I am so glad I went with this book instead of just relying on more traditional review books. Out of the 110 questions on my test, there were maybe 10 where I felt the material wasn't covered in this book. I am recommending this book to all of my friends who haven't taken this rotation yet.
  • I found that the information wasn’t the most up to date .. several things in the book were wrong .. so found the book to be useless because I kept having to fact-check
  • Used it to study for PA-S end of rotation exams and it was a fantastic book! it had everything I needed to know. I would highly recommend it to any PA-S out there looking for a way to steady for EORs.

"I love Kc Mills books . She is one of favorite authors but I just could not connect with the story. The characters and the story development just fell flat. It’s like when Eno was killed by Grey the scenes leading up to and following were so anti climatic . I’m like you killed your brother but you are more concerned about Ray. Maybe that deserved a couple more pages than getting between her legs again . He didn’t really seem to distraught about pulling the trigger . Regardless of what Eno did or the bad blood between them that’s still his brother. I know it’s just a book and not real but I like to be able to relate ( connect ) with a story . This series just didn’t do it for me but I’m looking forward to her new releases."

Never Love Another 2 edition by KC Mills Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • Omg 😮 this book 📖 was fire 🔥 those Garner folks was something but I love how they suck together and I especially love how they stepped up when Kim was away they took care of his son. Ray and Grey was faced with the ultimate decision to either stay together or be apart but when you truly love someone that’s hard to do even when that someone is connected to your worse nightmare. Each one of them found a love like no other and they created something so special that literally no one could tear them apart.. Aweosme Read
  • Grey was just it for me, I so loved his character. His decision was so hard but his heart made him choose, it just took things to another level in his relationship with ray. I liked that shakim became more willing to accept Keaton being a provider, it showed growth. Keaton been on his grown man ish and he didn't falter. The ladies were just as head strong, these characters were just bomb. Though there were still a few noticeable editing issues, enjoyed this series. Bring up what's next
  • This was a good story line not your average, but still filled with drama but most definitely love. The characters were funny and easy to fall in love with. Encore!
  • Love this book. I wish it was another part to this. But overall I would re-read this book again. Good job
  • I love Kc Mills books . She is one of favorite authors but I just could not connect with the story. The characters and the story development just fell flat. • This is the best completion to an already awesome series. I love how the characters grew into themselves and didn't let the boundaries and huge ego's stop them from loving who they wanted. I just can't say enough about Grey, that man is everything and the way he goes so hard for Ray leaves you breathless. His take charge attitude and his choice with his brother let's you know that family will break your heart. Kim is a man's man. Man enough to threaten your life and in the same breath dap you up and tell you to take care of his sister. Keen is just a lovable can't get enough of his thug sexy but I only want one woman self. I loved this book.
  • While KC Mills is a huge fave of mine I have to admit that I’ve found her last few releases way underwhelming. And this one is no different. The whole series is just Flat. It has a good setup, internal & external conflict, likeable characters & it is just Flat. The story never goes anywhere. She spends a ton of time developing the relationships & the characters. You know them & like them but it’s all very anti-climactic. The writing is fine, yes she’s still in need of an editor & though the characters are cool no one’s chemistry is jumping off the page. Sha’kim’s character was such a waste because she could’ve done sooo much more w/him but she didn’t. He & Naj got together like way too soon. They had the whole instalove thing happening which did nothing for the story. Hell Grey had a more compelling storyline than he did & Grey wasn’t a lead character. This one didn’t work for me but I am looking forward to her next release because I did like the Valentine’s novella so I’m hoping the standalone will be good.
  • I kinda feel sorry for Regina she was pregnant that didn't mean she should be got beating like a d@mn. She was money hungry sold her son for fifty thousand , but the nerve of her asking Naji if she could have A'Keel as a prop so her baby daddy's family won't take the new baby away. I want know why they were mad at Kim? Grey choice that effected greatly . Now I if that ain't love, I don't what is. Eno didn't care who got hurt as long he got his revenge. Praise walking around lying about he got jumped then sent Kim NDA. Cash was just thotting around looking for her next Keaton. How did Senna mammy find out where she was going to be had the nerve to talk to her all sweet and nice then had audacity to and talking reckless and say she was ungrateful and Keaton conned her into sign over Seth. Ungrateful a$$ woman. Great read until the next one.

In this 80th installment of the exploits of bounty hunter Jess Williams, he takes on some of his most evil foes yet. Sid Norton is a tough one. The notorious killer ambushes Jess, wounds him and heads in to finish him off. Just then a young woman living in the woods with her son fires at Norton and he rides away.

The woman is named Mandy and her boy is Davey. Together they get Jess to their tent. Mandy cleans and stitches his wound and they wait for him to come around, hoping they’ve done enough to keep him alive. When Jess wakes up he’s grateful, of course, but also concerned about the two living alone in the woods. Although Mandy has spunk, the pair might not be as lucky the next time evil men arrive. He convinces them to go with him as he follows Norton’s trail to the next town.
They find that Norton has continued his murderous ways, killing off the mayor and new town marshal of Deerfield, leaving the mayor’s wife to manage the general store they owned. Elsie, however, is in a wheelchair. Jess sets up Mandy and Davey to live with her and help run the store.

Jess is anxious to end Norton’s reign of terror before the killer takes the lives of any others, but Norton has already acted. After killing two more people in Temperance, Texas, one the barkeep, Norton holes up in the saloon in a battle to the death. Jess wins that battle and then heads to California, Texas, to turn in the body.

As soon as this task is finished a wagon arrives with a woman doctor clinging to life. She had earlier tended to Jess’s wounds, but after she treated one of the Coker brothers the ungrateful killer shot her and left her for dead.

As Jess heads off to seek vengeance on the Coker brothers, he comes across an old friend, but not under happy circumstances. John Booth has been chasing a bad guy but now he’s lying in the dirt barely alive. They head to the town of Mulberry to get him treatment and go after the Cokers.

  • The author has taken a great character in Jess Williams and turned him into a comic book persona. Shot three times in a week with 44 caliber rounds but is up and about in a couple of days??? The good doctor is shot in the stomach barley alive when she gets treatment and is up working in a week??? The stories are all alike ride into town kill a couple of men ride out on the trail get shot kill a couple men ride back to town see dr walk out get into a gunfight kill another man collect bounty leave town go after another man!!! No real story line or development of any sense of a story. He priced his books like he is a very good author but they aren’t even worth the original .99 cents they started out costing!!!! I have bought every one of the trash books hoping that the author would improve his writing ability but he actually has gotten worse with this book being at the bottom of the series!!! I will buy no more of his poor excuse for a book...
  • I have every book in the Jess Williams Series and they get better with each new one issued. I love westerns - Louis L' Amour, William Johnston and now Robert Thomas! By far, I love the Jess Williams series the best. I count down the days till the next one is released. I love the way he thinks in the series - To take down the worst of the worst, to protect the innocent and to provide help where it's needed. Thank you so much for the enjoyment I get from each book published and I hope there will be many more in the future!!
  • This is my opinion only. Thought this was very different from the other Jess Williams in the series. Jess previously didn't like disclosing his U.S. Marshal's status but in this one he almost seems proud of the fact & doesn't hesitate to inform others that he is a bounty hunter & on occasion a U.S. Marshal, almost bragging about it at times. Also, another difference...when he was about to face gunfighter Fred Kannon he says to himself, "Well Lucifer, you're about to collect one more soul...I hope."
Jess has always been positive about his abilities but yet he is now a bit doubtful. That is a somewhat scary for us who have followed right along with Jess.
Then you add to that the fact that Jess is shot several times throughout this story...makes me wonder if he's not slowing down a bit & getting ready to retire.
The title of "Wounded" fits this one but I'm hoping this isn't a snapshot of things to come.
All in all it was an exciting addition to the series & I particularly liked his new partner. Not only did Booth save Jess but they became better friends & I hope to see him team up with Jess in the future.
To sum this up, EXCELLENT! I finished it in record time & now I'm going to hate myself because I didn't take my time and savor it more. Highly recommend this fantastic western series...
  • RJT provides another classic collection of Jess Williams stories that keep you engaged and just simply do not want to set the book aside until you regretfully see the The End. Wounded provides brings the reader back to the reality that Jess Is human and capable of error, but driven to overcome those errors to bring about six gun justice. I really hope we hear more about Mandy and her son, RJT did a great job of developing their characters and I think there has to be much more to their story. Looking forward to more.
  • I started reading this book not realizing it was eighteenth in a series. I usually like to start at the first and progress with the author. I had also never read any of Mr. Thomas's stories. I really am sorry that I missed out on a master storytellers books all this time. The book starts out at a dead run and ends the same way. If you are a follower of Jess Williams western you will love this, if your not you will be when you are through reading this book.
  • I always anxiously await the next new addition of Jess Williams, each is just as good as the previous one. What I Iike most about Jess is that he always gets the bad guy and he is so generous in helping others. In Wounded Jess helps out Mandy and her five year old son Davey, after Mandy has nursed him back from an ambushed wound and she saved his life. In this book there are other people whom Jess has helped and plenty of bad guys lying in dirt blankets.
  • This is another very fine work, author Thomas. Your Jess Williams character invention is as clever as it is brilliant. I know you'll keep 'em coming, as you've given us his wife's name in an early novel, then you introduced her to your readers fairly recently. Looking forward to the "courtship", and, what you do with the very interesting secondary characters you've created...Booth, Wildcat, Olin, Nutball 😅, to name a few.
