The North Star FastPaced Scifi Action Adventure Galactic Sentinel Book One eBook Killian Carter Reviews

  • Ok, this is a case of bad news / good news. The bad news is that anyone who didn’t see there was an update available read the wrong version, an early draft prior to being edited and full of errors. Unfortunately that seemed to have happened a lot and, as a result, there are a bunch of 1 star ratings that I am sure would have been higher if the right version had been read. As for the updated book, it’s actually pretty darn good. Lots of action, string lead and supporting characters, and a solid plot, all well written. I’d score it just below 5 stars (I’ve rounded up), mostly deducting because the “happily enough for now” ending has such a huge story twist that it might as well have been a cliffhanger and now I’m totally annoyed I can’t just dive into book 2. If that’s not an issue for you then up this to a solid 5 rating. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
  • Clio Evans is a pilot trainee, the best in her simulations, fitted with special optical insets to improve her performance. This changes her appearance enough that arrogant cadets pick on her, getting her into fights and earning disciplinary reports. Commander Grimshaw has to maintain order in the Academy training ship but finds a soft spot for Clio. One training mission turns secretive and deadly. These two learn whom to trust and whom to protect in the heat of intense battle with powerful aliens.
Meanwhile, in the underworld of Sentinel Station, the “eye of the galaxy,” Randis has a few battles of his own, trying to get back out of the deep hole he found when his illustrious secret-agent career crashed. He gets a few surprises in the process.
These two groups are destined to meet.
This book takes the reader through the heavy fighting, the alien technology, and the desperate struggle by the humans to survive. The reader will not soon forget this adventure! And I will be reading more of this story soon.
  • After a rough start, the author has gone to great lengths to correct all errors / typos / etc., which some reviewers have mentioned. I know of at least 2 separate updates that I found on under ‘devices and content’, since my original purchase on April 4th, so be sure you are reading and reporting on the most up-to-date version. That being said...

The story is a complex military, space opera, involving numerous races, and political divisions, over a span of galaxies connected by gates. The author interweaves a number of distinctive plot lines. First you have the military fleet academy cadets get involved in what they assume is a traditional training mission to Colony 115, except they have three special high level individuals on board and are being escorted by Second Fleet’s flagship. Soon the recruits routine training mission becomes a struggle for life, after they are attacked by an unknown force. While back at the lower levels of Sentinel Station, the author has another mysterious character coming to the forefront.

Each of the author’s main characters is unique, with a history that influences their actions. The interesting characters include a talented but somewhat maladjusted pilot trainee. A strong battle tested Commander. A disgraced agent, who has been in hiding for years. A medical doctor, who is much more than an Md, and ‘Booster’, a rare and adorable creature.

I’m looking forward to learning more about the mysterious Mr. Wu and why he’s been looking out for Randis all these years. As well as learning what the invaders recovered from the planet. Hopefully book 2, ‘Enter The Shroud’ will contain those answers.
  • Loved this book! The multiple storylines keep the story flowing and there’s plenty of action and adventure to keep you reading. I always enjoy reading books with many main characters. It always makes me read faster because I can’t wait to get back to a certain character. The author did a great job with world building and character development. Overall it’s just a really great start to a series. This is the first book I’ve read from the author and I will definitely continue to read more. I would recommend this book to any who likes to read science fiction. There’s a bit of everything sprinkled throughout.

The North Star is the first book in the Galactic Sentinel series.

    Final Rating 5 Stars
  • I’ve read some not so great reviews so make sure you go and update tbe book to the most recent version as all typos and errors have been fixed! This is a wonderful sci-fi adventure that I couldn’t put down. The world building was superb and the characters had such depth. Killian Carter is a great author and I definitely recommend this book 100 times over. You won’t be sorry to give this author a chance
  • Carter has done a masterful job weaving plots within plots within more plots. You never know from page to page what direction the story is going to take and why!
The action is non-stop and exhausting because you feel like you are right there on the ground fighting with the Marines trying to get Clio and Grimshaw to their target. Once you start reading this first installment in the series, you won't put it down till the last word on the last page.
I highly recommend this novel and gladly award it 5 Stars!
  • A fantastic story that grips and holds the reader. Clio Evans is an outsider who thinks she doesn’t want to belong but finds the family she needs with Commander Grimshaw and the crew that she faces death with against the previously unknown insectivore Chits. The writing is well done and makes you want to know what happens in the next installment. The downside is that the editing really needed help but a riveting storyline will take me past those points. Overall a truly enjoyable read.
